There are many types of hydronic systems where the rate of heat generation by the heat source is very different from the rate at which the building requires heat. When only one or two zones require heating, the output of the boiler far exceeds the rate of heat demand. This can lead to heat source short cycling, reduced efficiency and shorter equipment life. One way to avert such conditions is to add thermal storage to the system.

Guest speaker John Siegenthaler, P.E., will explore several ways to do this. He will discuss the hardware and sizing of thermal storage in a variety of systems, including those supplied by boilers, solar thermal collectors, heat pumps and biomass boilers. He will also describe unique control methods that maximize the performance of thermal storage.  Listen in and learn about:

- How do you know if thermal storage is necessary?
- What types of thermal storage tanks are available?
- What are the pros and cons of pressurized vs unpressurized thermal storage?
- How do you size a thermal storage tank for different apps?
- How do you integrate a thermal storage tank with multiple heat sources?
- What is a thermocline, and how do you maintain it?
- When are ASME rated tanks necessary?
- What’s the best way to connect multiple thermal storage tanks?

A mechanical engineering graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a licensed professional engineer, John has over 30 years’ experience in designing modern hydronic heating systems.  He is the principal of Appropriate Designs and avid author of Modern Hydronic Heating and numerous other publications dealing with hydronic heating.
