Protecting Boilers Against Flue Gas Condensation
Thursday, Oct. 18
12 noon CDT

For decades, conventional boilers operating on natural gas, propane, fuel oil or wood were intended to be operated at conditions that prevent the flue gases produced during combustion from condensing within the boiler or the venting system. This was easily accomplished when hydronic distribution systems operated at high water temperatures. However, many of these boilers are now being combined with low temperature distribution systems such as radiant floor heating. Without proper detailing and controls this can subject those boilers to operating conditions that result in rapid corrosion and scaling.

John Siegenthaler, P.E., joins the webinar series to discuss why this dangerous condition occurs and will show several methods for avoiding it. You'll learn:

→ What does and doesn’t constitute proper boiler protection?
→ Is a bypass circulator or bypass pipe adequate to protect a boiler from sustained flue gas condensation?
→ Are there hardware options other than mixing valves that provide boiler protection? What are they?
→ Can a boiler be protected against flue gas condensation using a manually set (non-thermostatic) valve?
→ Does proper boiler protection limit the rate at which a boiler can add heat to a building?
→ What is meant by a “thermal clutch” between the boiler and distribution system?

A seasoned industry leader and passionate teacher, John shares his over 35 years’ experience in the understanding and proper application of water-based engineering principles with our audience. He is the principal of Appropriate Designs and a regular contributor to industry publications Plumbing and MechanicalPM Engineer and HPAC magazines.
