Subject - Legionella & Public Health: DHS Field Notes
When - Thursday, August 29 from 12:00 - 1:00pm CDT
Technical Content Level - Intermediate
During the past seven years of conducting Legionella environmental assessments, Bruce Meiners has seen the (potential) “smoking gun” in buildings’ water distribution systems and in other water features such as hot tubs, cooling towers, and fountains. This presentation will mainly focus on the premise plumbing’s potable water system and provide examples of “the bad and the ugly” of what may have caused legionellosis cases and deaths among people. Most of what Bruce has seen in the field during the past seven years could have been mitigated with a well-written and implemented Water Management Program. Through time, the municipal and building infrastructure ages, creating biofilm, and time creates the villain, water age. During the webinar we will answer:
→What key elements should be included in a Water Management Program to effectively prevent Legionella?
→How does aging infrastructure and biofilm formation contribute to Legionella proliferation?
→How effective do you find current regulations in preventing Legionella related incidents?
→What future trends do you see for Legionella prevention and management?
Bruce is the Legionella Industrial Hygienist at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Division of Public Health’s Bureau of Communicable Diseases. He has extensive experience with the ASPE Legionella Design Guide committee, IAPMO Water Demand Calculator – Healthcare task group, IAPMO Construction Practices for Potable Water Systems Committee, and the IAPMO International Plumbing Design Group.
