Engineering Out Legionella: Water Management for Long‑Term Control
Thursday, August 27, 2026
12:00 - 1:00PM CDT

Even well‑designed and properly constructed systems can create Legionella risk if they are not operated and maintained with water quality in mind. The third and final session in this three-part series connects engineering decisions to ongoing water management practices. Christoph Lohr and Tim Bartrand will discuss how plumbing system design influences disinfectant residuals, stagnation, temperature control, and overall water quality outcomes within a water management program.

→ Poll results from the May Coffee with Caleffi, “Foundations and Design Responsibility”
→ Aligning system design with operational realities
→ Best practices to help owners and operators sustain Legionella risk reduction over time

Christoph Lohr, P.E. is the IAPMO Vice President of Technical Services and Research. As part of his duties he provides industry leadership through participation in strategic industry initiatives, and provides technical support to all IAPMO’s business units as needed. Christoph has over a decade of experience in designing plumbing systems and has a reputation as a results-oriented expert, particularly in the realm of balancing waterborne pathogen prevention and water sustainability.  He is a distinguished graduate from the Virginia Military Institute, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Tim Bartrand, Ph.D. is the IAPMO Director of Water Research. Tim has researched drinking water quality for more than 25 years and is working with IAPMO to build a bridge between the water supply and building water communities to promote safe and sustainable water, all the way to the tap, and safe and effective, all the way to the municipal collection system. Tim earned his doctoral degree from Drexel University where he researched the impact of ozone contactor hydraulics on Cryptosporidium disinfection.
